Gao Bo 1964. Artista indipendente vive e lavora tra Pechino e Parigi. 2017 – 2018 Professore Ospite presso il FRESNOY Studio National des Arts Contemporains in Francia. Si è diplomato alla Scuola Superiore affiliata all'Accademia di Belle Arti del Sichuan nel 1983 e all'Accademia di Arti e Design dell'Università di Tsinghua nel 1987. Nel 1990 ha vissuto in Francia e ha lavorato con l'Agence VU e la Galerie VU. Dal 2002 al 2009 fonda lo studio di architettura BoARCHI e si dedica alla progettazione architettonica.
Nel 1986 ha vinto il primo premio (fotocamera Hasselblad) in un concorso fotografico nazionale in Cina, il premio d'oro al VISA International Photography Festival di Perpignan in Francia nel 1989, il “libro più bello del mondo”, il premio tedesco della Kommission UNESCO nel 1998. Le sue opere sono state esposte in Cina, Francia, Germania, Belgio, Spagna, Italia, Svizzera, Svezia, Stati Uniti, Brasile, Inghilterra, Giappone e Corea del Sud e sono state collezionate da musei, istituzioni d'arte e collezionisti privati di tutto il mondo.
Ha dato inizio al “Laostismo”, un concetto filosofico ed estetico, che permea tutte le sue opere d'arte (Laostismo e Laostista derivano da Lost, Loser e Lao tse. Lao tse nel cinese parlato è “me”. “Lost” nella fonetica cinese la traduzione è ‘luosi’, che significa ‘pensiero nudo’). Negli ultimi 30 anni il suo lavoro prevede una pratica globale tra fotografia, installazioni fotografiche, tecniche miste e performance.
Nel 2017 la sua mostra personale “Gao Bo | Les Offrandes” si è tenuta presso la Maison Européenne de la Photographie de la Ville de Paris. Allo stesso tempo, otto cataloghi delle sue opere furono stampati da sei editori in tutto il mondo. Al museo sono stati proiettati anche due film incentrati sulla vita e sull'arte di Gao Bo “Gao Bo: Between Beijing and Paris”, diretto da Wu Wenguang, che ha diretto “Bumming in Beijing” e “Gao Bo: Dans le noir de l'Histoire” diretto dal noto regista, autore e fotografo francese Alain Fleischer.
